Shiva Sahasranamam (ஶிவ ஸஹஸ்ரநாமம்) is the hymn of the thousand names of Shiva, from the Mahabharata (Anushasana Parva, chapter 17), as taught by the sage Upamanyu to Krishna. It is recited on Mondays, at Maha Shivaratri and on Pradosham days.
The hymn is long, so this page is split into 7 parts, with next and previous buttons between them. Part 1 begins with the meditation verse, then the 123 verses of the stotram follow in order. The opening and closing sections of the chapter (the story of how the hymn was taught and the fruits of reciting it) are not included.
ஶிவ ஸஹஸ்ரநாமம் என்பது சிவபெருமானின் ஆயிரம் திருநாமங்களைக் கொண்ட துதி. இது மகாபாரதத்தில் (அனுசாசன பர்வம், அத்தியாயம் 17) உபமன்யு முனிவர் கிருஷ்ணருக்குக் கற்பித்ததாக வருகிறது. திங்கட்கிழமைகளிலும், மகா சிவராத்திரியிலும், பிரதோஷ நாட்களிலும் ஓதப்படுகிறது.

Tamil script has one letter for each group of consonants, but Sanskrit has four sounds in each group (for example ka, kha, ga, gha). A small number after a letter tells you which sound to say. தமிழ் எழுத்துமுறையில் ஒவ்வொரு வகைக்கும் ஒரே எழுத்து உள்ளது; சம்ஸ்கிருதத்தில் நான்கு ஒலிகள் உண்டு (க, கா, க³ போன்றவை). எழுத்தின் மேல் உள்ள சிறு எண் எந்த ஒலி என்று காட்டுகிறது.

Examples from the verses: ஜக³த் = jagat · ஸ்தி²தி = sthiti · யுத்³த⁴ = yuddha · தா⁴ரிணே = dhārine. The same rule works for the other groups (ச, ட, ப and so on). Letters such as ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ ஶ are Grantha letters used for Sanskrit sounds, and you read them as in Sanskrit. A tick or dot over a letter (த்) means the consonant has no vowel. ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ, ஶ போன்றவை சம்ஸ்கிருத ஒலிகளுக்கான கிரந்த எழுத்துகள்.
