Illustration: Chandesvarar, a young cowherd boy with a pot of milk

In a village called Seyngalur, a boy named Vichara Sarma grew up with a quiet, thoughtful nature. He loved to learn, and he loved the cows that grazed near the river.

In that village the boys took turns to look after the village cows. When it was his turn, Vichara Sarma was so gentle with them that the cows seemed to listen to every word he said. They gave more milk than ever.

One day on the riverbank, he gathered some fine sand and shaped it into a small Shiva lingam. He picked flowers and set them around it. Then he took milk from the cows and poured it over his lingam as a gift, just as the priests do in the temple.

He did this day after day. It made him so happy that he forgot about everything else. The milk he used was only a little, and it came from the cows that would have given far more than the village needed.

Some of the villagers did not understand. They told his father that the boy was wasting good milk. His father came to see for himself and became upset. In the old story, he was not able to see what the boy saw, and he spoiled the little shrine.

That very moment, Lord Shiva appeared in a bright light with His wife Parvati. Shiva said to the boy, From today, I am your father. He took off the flower garland he was wearing and placed it around the boy's neck.

Shiva gave him a new name, Chandesvarar, and made him the chief of all His servants. In many Shiva temples today, there is a small shrine of Chandesvarar, and people gently clap or snap their fingers when they visit it, to remember the little boy and his sand lingam.
