ஶிவ ஸஹஸ்ரநாமம் – பகுதி 7

How to read the small numbers ² ³ ⁴ · சிறு எண்களை எப்படிப் படிப்பது (² ³ ⁴)

Tamil script has one letter for each group of consonants, but Sanskrit has four sounds in each group (for example ka, kha, ga, gha). A small number after a letter tells you which sound to say. தமிழ் எழுத்துமுறையில் ஒவ்வொரு வகைக்கும் ஒரே எழுத்து உள்ளது; சம்ஸ்கிருதத்தில் நான்கு ஒலிகள் உண்டு (க, கா, க³ போன்றவை). எழுத்தின் மேல் உள்ள சிறு எண் எந்த ஒலி என்று காட்டுகிறது.

Mark · குறிSound · ஒலிExample · எடுத்துக்காட்டு
no number · எண் இல்லைthe plain sound · சாதாரண ஒலி (ka, ta, pa)க = ka · த = ta · ப = pa
² (2)aspirated: the plain sound with a puff of breath · மூச்சுக் காற்றுடன் (kha, tha, pha)க² = kha · த² = tha · ப² = pha
³ (3)voiced: as in "go", "dog", "bat" · மென்மையான குரல் ஒலி (ga, da, ba)க³ = ga · த³ = da · ப³ = ba
⁴ (4)voiced with a puff of breath · குரலுடன் மூச்சுக் காற்று (gha, dha, bha)க⁴ = gha · த⁴ = dha · ப⁴ = bha

Examples from the verses: ஜக³த் = jagat · ஸ்தி²தி = sthiti · யுத்³த⁴ = yuddha · தா⁴ரிணே = dhārine. The same rule works for the other groups (ச, ட, ப and so on). Letters such as ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ ஶ are Grantha letters used for Sanskrit sounds, and you read them as in Sanskrit. A tick or dot over a letter (த்) means the consonant has no vowel.

In English

Lines 1–30: Verses 109 and 110 include names such as the supreme self, the three-eyed one, the self of all that moves and does not move, the nectar of immortality, the lord of the bull and the sun. The last verses call him the supreme Brahman, the highest refuge of his devotees and the glorious one. The names continue. Each one is a title of Shiva that points to one of his qualities, his forms or his deeds, and some are the names of other gods and sages that the hymn also gives to him. This page does not divide them by theme; commentaries explain each name.
