In a forest village, a boy named Thinnan grew up among hunters. He was a brave and strong boy, and he could follow the faintest footprints. But he also had a very soft heart.
One day, when Thinnan was a young man, he went hunting on a hill near a place called Kalahasti. In a small clearing he found a stone shrine, a Shiva lingam, with flowers around it. Something in his heart told him that this was special, and that no one should be left alone there.
Thinnan did not know the temple rules. He did not know any prayers. He only knew how to love, and so he did what he knew. He fetched water from the stream, carrying it in his mouth. He picked wild flowers and tucked them in his hair. Then he brought the best food from his hunt as a gift.
A priest named Sivagochariyar looked after that shrine. When he came in the morning, he was shocked to see the mess. He cleaned it up and prayed with the proper rituals. But the next day, the hunter came again with his own gifts.
Shiva appeared to the priest in a dream and said, Please do not be upset. What he offers me is love, and I treasure it. Come and see for yourself tomorrow.
The next day the priest hid behind a tree and watched. The lingam seemed to be in trouble, and young Thinnan was so upset that he was ready to give anything to help. He offered his own eyes, because he thought it was the most precious thing he had. Just in time, a voice called, Stop, Kannappa! Stay by me. Shiva made him whole and happy.
People began to call him Kannappa, the one with the eyes of love. He is remembered as one of the most loved of the sixty-three Nayanmars, and his story is told in Kalahasti to this day.
