Illustration: Thirumoolar, an old yogi with a long white beard and a gentle cow beside him

Long ago, a wise yogi named Sundaranathar came from the Himalayas to the south of India. He had learned to do wonderful things with his breath and his mind. He wanted to visit his friend, the sage Agastya, who lived on a hill in the south.

On the way, he rested by the river at a place called Thiruvavaduthurai. There he heard a heart-breaking sound. A herd of cows was standing around the body of their cowherd, a man named Moolan. The cows were crying and nuzzling him, and they would not leave.

The yogi felt great pity for the cows. He knew a special way to enter another body. He hid his own body safely inside a hollow tree, and then he gently entered the body of Moolan.

The cowherd stood up, and the cows were overjoyed. They licked his hands and followed him happily as he led them home to the village. Moolan's wife was worried when she saw him, because he spoke and acted differently. He told her kindly that he was not the same man, and he went away.

The yogi went back to the hollow tree to find his own body, but it was gone. In the old story, Lord Shiva had hidden it, because He had a plan. The yogi understood. He stayed in the form of Moolan and sat under a tree by the temple.

He sat there in deep meditation and wrote one beautiful verse every year. After three thousand years, there were three thousand verses. They are called the Thirumandiram. People call him Thirumoolar, the sacred Moolan.

One of his best-loved lines says that love and God are one. People say that the ones who do not know think they are two, but whoever understands knows that love itself is Shiva.
