In the old city of Kanchi lived a man named Sakkiyar, who had followed the path of the Buddha and spent his days in quiet study. He liked to walk and to think.

One day on his walk, he came across a Shiva lingam standing quietly under a tree. It was out in the open, with no roof and no flowers. Sakkiyar looked at it and was filled with a warm feeling. Without knowing why, he wanted to give it a gift.

He had no flowers with him and no sweets. He looked around and saw small stones on the ground. He picked up a small pebble and gently placed it before the lingam, as if it were a flower.

Every day after that, he came back, and he offered a small stone before he ate his meal. It became a happy habit for him, a bit like saying thank you.

One day, he sat down to eat and had put the first mouthful of rice in his bowl when he suddenly realised he had not made his offering. He put the bowl down at once and ran all the way to the lingam. He placed his stone there, then he smiled.

At that moment, Lord Shiva appeared in the sky and blessed him. People still tell the story of Sakkiya Nayanar as a reminder that what we give matters less than the love with which we give it.
