Long ago, in the Tamil land, a boy named Marulneekkiyar grew up in a village called Thiruvamur. His name means the one who clears away darkness. He had a loving older sister named Thilakavathiyar, and the two of them were very close.

When he was a young man he was a great student. He loved learning and he spent many years with a community of monks, discussing big questions. But one day he fell terribly ill with a pain in his tummy, and none of the doctors could help him.

His sister had been praying to Lord Shiva at a temple called Thiruvathigai. She sent word, and the young man went home to her. She gave him a pinch of sacred ash. He sang his very first song to Shiva, and the pain melted away. A voice from the sky called him Navukkarasar, which means the king of words.

From that day he sang for Shiva everywhere he walked. People called him Appar, which means father, because he was so warm and wise. Appar travelled from temple to temple. At each one he carried a small tool called an uzhavaram, a little spade for pulling out weeds and sweeping the paths. He said that serving the temple was better than any grand speech.

Not everyone was happy about his songs, and some people tried to stop him. In one old story, he was tied to a heavy stone and put into the sea. Appar did not shout or cry. He sat calmly and sang a song that begins with the five sacred syllables, Na Ma Si Va Ya. The stone floated like a raft and carried him safely back to the shore.

Appar lived a long life of walking, singing and helping. He met a young boy saint named Sambandar, and the two became the best of friends. He is remembered as one of the four great poet saints of the Tamil Shiva tradition, and his songs are still sung today.
