Far away on the Malabar coast, in the land that is now Kerala, there ruled a gentle king called Cheraman Perumal. He loved Lord Shiva very much. Every morning after his prayers, he waited quietly, because he believed that he could hear the soft jingle of Shiva's golden anklets.

The king was kind and fair to all his people, and he was a great friend to poets. One day he heard about a young singer named Sundarar, who sang beautiful songs to Shiva. The king longed to meet him.

The two met, and from the very first day they became the closest of friends. Sundarar stayed at the king's palace and sang. The king listened and treasured every song. They shared stories, laughter and long walks in the garden.

In time, Sundarar felt that it was time for his journey to end. In the old story, Lord Shiva sent a white elephant from the heavens to carry him to Mount Kailash, the sacred mountain home of Shiva.

When King Cheraman saw his friend rising into the sky on the elephant, he could not bear to be left behind. He leapt onto his own royal horse and whispered the five sacred syllables, Na Ma Si Va Ya, into its ear. The horse rose up into the air and followed the elephant across the clouds.

The friends arrived together at Kailash. There, the king composed a long poem about the wonders he saw, called the Thirukailaya Gnana Ula, and Shiva was pleased to hear it. Cheraman Perumal is remembered as one of the sixty-three Nayanmars, a king who valued friendship above his crown.
