A boy was born in a village called Thirunavalur, and his name was Sundarar, which means the handsome one. A kind chieftain who ruled the nearby lands saw the boy at a festival, loved him at once, and brought him up as his own son in the palace.
When Sundarar grew up, a grand wedding was planned. The family and the whole village had gathered, the drums were playing, and flower garlands hung on every doorway.
Just as the ceremony began, an old man with a stick walked into the hall. He raised his hand and said, Stop! This young man is my servant, and I have an old paper that says so.
Everyone was shocked. Sundarar laughed at first, and he said that nobody in his family had ever been a servant. The old man showed an ancient palm leaf, and then he said that the court of the town should decide.
The elders read the leaf and found that it really was an old promise made by Sundarar's own grandfather. The old man smiled and began to walk away. Sundarar followed him, puzzled, all the way to a temple. There the old man stepped into the doorway of the inner room and was gone.
Sundarar understood. The old man was Lord Shiva himself. Then he heard a voice from the sky say, I called you my servant, and I am glad you followed. Now sing to me. Sundarar asked, but what shall I call you? And the voice said, Call me Pithan, the one who is a little mad with love.
The very first words of his first song were Pitha Pirai Soodi, which means the one who wears the crescent moon. Sundarar kept singing for the rest of his life, and he came to call Shiva his dear friend. He is remembered as the third of the great singers of the Thevaram.
