Thandiyadigal Nayanar: The blind man who dug the pond
தண்டியடிகள் நாயனார் · a storybook to read and listen to · படித்துக் கேட்கும் கதைப் புத்தகம்
In the temple town of Thiruvarur, a baby was born who could not see. But the child grew up with a strong heart and a calm mind, and he spent his days thinking about Lord Shiva. His name was Thandi.
He could not see the beautiful temple, but he could feel the cool stone with his hands, hear the bells and smell the incense. He prayed on the temple steps every day.
Next to the temple was a large pond, called a tank, where people bathed before going in. But the tank had grown shallow and muddy, and the edges had crumbled. Thandi wanted to clear it out and make it deep and clean.
He could not see where to dig. So he drove one wooden stake into the ground at one end, and another at the far end, and he tied a long rope between them. He held the rope with one hand and dug with the other, and the rope showed him where to go. As he worked, he said the name of Shiva.
The work was slow, but he kept at it day after day. Some of his neighbours did not like the idea and tried to stop him. They pulled up the stakes and moved the rope, and Thandi, who could not see, got confused and was upset.
He prayed with all his heart. In the old story, Lord Shiva heard him and gave him back his sight, and the tank was made deep and wide. Thandiyadigal is remembered as one of the sixty-three Nayanmars. His story shows that a person can do great things in spite of a hard start.
