Anaya Nayanar: The cowherd with the flute
ஆனாய நாயனார் · a storybook to read and listen to · படித்துக் கேட்கும் கதைப் புத்தகம்
In a green village full of meadows lived a young cowherd called Anaya. His family looked after the village cows, and every morning he led them to a lush pasture at the edge of the forest.
Anaya had a gift. He could play the flute so sweetly that anyone who heard it forgot what they were doing. And he only ever played songs for Lord Shiva. He often played the five sacred syllables, Na Ma Si Va Ya, in his music.
One day he sat under a flowering tree and began to play. The sweet notes drifted over the grass and into the forest. The cows stopped eating and lifted their heads. The calves forgot to play. The deer stepped quietly out of the trees to listen, and the birds became still on the branches.
Even the peacocks stopped dancing for a moment, and the monkeys sat very still. The wind itself seemed to slow down, so that it would not disturb the music.
In the old story, the sound floated up to the heavens, and Lord Shiva heard it. He was so delighted that He came down to the pasture with His wife Parvati. They stood quietly and listened, and then they blessed Anaya.
Anaya went on playing his flute for the rest of his life, and he is remembered as one of the sixty-three Nayanmars. His story reminds us that music made with a pure heart can reach everyone, people and animals alike.
