In the village of Thirupunkur, a man named Nandanar worked in the fields. He was strong and honest, and he worked with leather and drums. He loved Lord Shiva so much that he sang about Him all through the day.

Nandanar could not go to the temple like other people. In those days, many people were not allowed inside the temple because of the family they were born into, and this was a sad and unfair custom. But Nandanar did not become bitter. He gave the temple what he could: leather for the drums and strings for the musical instruments.

Every day he walked to the temple gate and stood outside. He could see only a little piece of the shrine over the wall. He would stand there, his hands joined, and sing. Sometimes tears ran down his face.

The great stone bull, Nandi, sat in front of the shrine facing the Lord, and its big body blocked the view. Nandanar thought quietly to himself, if only I could see a tiny bit of Him.

In the old story, Lord Shiva heard the heart behind the song. He said to Nandi, please move a little to the side, so that my friend can see me. The big stone bull shifted, and Nandanar saw the Lord clearly for the very first time.

To this day in Thirupunkur, people say the bull sits a little to one side. Nandanar is remembered as one of the sixty-three Nayanmars. He is sometimes called Thirunalaipovar, which means the one who will go tomorrow, because he always hoped for a tomorrow when he could visit the great temple at Chidambaram.
