Pusalar Nayanar: The temple built in the heart
பூசலார் நாயனார் · a storybook to read and listen to · படித்துக் கேட்கும் கதைப் புத்தகம்
In the town of Thirunindravur lived a quiet man named Pusalar. He did not have much money, but he had a very big dream. He wanted to build a beautiful temple for Lord Shiva.
He tried asking people for help, but he could not collect enough. He felt sad, and for a while he did not know what to do. Then a thought came to him. If I cannot build a temple with bricks, he said, I can build one in my mind.
So he began. In his imagination he dug the foundation. He chose the stones and imagined carrying them one by one. He built the walls and the tall tower at the entrance, and he carved every picture in his mind. He worked on it every day, with great care.
At last the temple was finished. Pusalar picked a day for the grand opening, which in Tamil is called the Kumbhabhishekam. He told nobody, because it was all inside his heart.
Meanwhile, in the great city of Kanchi, a king of the Pallava family had built a magnificent stone temple for Shiva. He had chosen the very same day for his grand opening.
The night before the ceremony, the king had a dream. Lord Shiva said to him, please move your opening to another day. I must go to the temple of my friend Pusalar in Thirunindravur on that day.
The king woke up amazed. He travelled to Thirunindravur and asked, where is the temple of Pusalar? The people said they did not know of one. At last he found Pusalar himself and heard the whole story. The king bowed to him, and he understood that a temple built with love, even in the mind, was as real as one made of stone.
