In the seaside town of Karaikkal there lived a merchant's daughter named Punithavathi. She was kind to everyone and she loved Lord Shiva with all her heart. When she grew up she was married to a young merchant named Paramadattan.

One day Paramadattan's friends brought him two beautiful mangoes at his shop. He sent them home for his wife to keep for his lunch. Soon afterwards a hungry traveller who was a devotee of Shiva knocked on the door and asked for some food.

Punithavathi had already cooked the rice, but there were no side dishes yet. So she gave the traveller his meal with one of the mangoes, and he went away well fed and happy.

At lunchtime her husband came home, and she served him the rice and the other mango. He enjoyed it so much that he asked for the second one. Punithavathi was worried, because there was none left to give. She quietly prayed to Shiva for help.

In the old story, a ripe mango appeared in her hand. She gave it to her husband, and he found it far sweeter than the first. He asked, where did this come from? When she told him the truth, he said, Then please get me another, and Punithavathi prayed again. A second mango came, but when she handed it to her husband, it vanished.

Her husband was amazed and uneasy. Punithavathi decided to spend her whole life in prayer and song. Lord Shiva welcomed her warmly and called her Ammaiye, which means mother. She asked for only one gift: that she would never forget him, and that she would always sing at his feet.

She became known as Karaikkal Ammaiyar and she is one of the very first women poets of the Tamil language. Her songs, such as the Arputha Thiruvandhadhi, are still read today.
