In the town of Sirkazhi, a little boy was born to a family who loved Lord Shiva. His father took him along to the temple. The boy was only three years old.

One morning, his father went down to the temple tank to bathe and told the little boy to wait on the steps. The boy sat quietly for a while. Then he looked around. His father was out of sight under the water, and the boy began to cry for him.

In the old story, Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati heard the little voice. Parvati filled a golden cup with milk, and she gave it to the child. She said it was the milk of wisdom, and the boy drank it all.

When his father came up from the water, he saw milk on the boy's lips. He asked, Who gave you this? The little boy did not answer in the usual way. He pointed to the sky and sang his very first song, which begins with the words Thodudaiya Seviyan. It means, the one with an earring in his ear.

The song poured out of him like a river, and everyone nearby came running to listen. From then on people called him Gnanasambandar, the child who was filled with wisdom. As he grew he travelled from town to town, singing Shiva's praise at every temple.

Along the way he was given gifts. In one tale, Shiva gave him a pair of tiny golden cymbals to keep the beat of his songs. In another, he was given a canopy and a palanquin made of pearls. He also met the great Appar, and he called Appar by the name that stayed forever, father.

His songs are among the first in the collection called the Thevaram, and many families still sing them. A song that begins at the age of three reminds us that wisdom and joy do not wait for us to grow up.
