In a town called Ilayankudi lived a farmer named Maranar. He had good fields and a loving wife, and he had one great joy in life: feeding the devotees of Lord Shiva who passed through the town.
Whoever knocked on his door was welcomed with a seat, clean water for their feet and a hot meal. He never asked who they were or where they came from.
As time went by, Maranar gave away so much that he became poor. The cupboards emptied and the stores of grain ran low. But he did not stop welcoming guests, and he kept finding ways to help them.
One stormy night the rain poured down and the wind howled. Late in the night, there was a knock at the door. An old man stood in the doorway, soaked and hungry. Maranar welcomed him in and gave him a place to rest.
Then he looked in the kitchen. There was nothing left, not a handful of rice. He whispered to his wife, what shall we do? His wife said, today at sunrise you sowed seeds in the field, and the rain will have washed them loose. Perhaps we can gather them.
Maranar took a basket and went into the dark, rainy field. He felt around in the wet mud and picked up the seeds he had planted that morning. His wife washed them and cooked them over a fire. She had no firewood, so she burned the dry bits of the roof beam. At last the meal was ready.
When Maranar went to call his guest, the room was empty. In his place stood Lord Shiva, smiling, with His wife Parvati. A voice said, your kindness has been seen. In the morning, Maranar's fields and storeroom were overflowing with grain, and he went on welcoming guests for the rest of his life.
