Under a jambu tree at a place called Thiruvanaikka, there was a small shrine of Lord Shiva. A little spider lived in that tree, and it loved the shrine. It spun a delicate web above the lingam so that dry leaves and dust would not fall on it.
Every morning a big, gentle elephant came to the same shrine. It filled its trunk with water from the Kaveri river and poured it over the lingam. It brought flowers too, and it laid them down with great care.
When the elephant saw the spider web over the lingam, it thought the web was dirt. It swept the web away, and then washed the lingam and placed the flowers as usual.
The spider, who had worked so hard, spun a new web the next day. And the next morning, the elephant swept it away again. The spider felt that the elephant did not understand, and its heart grew sore. The tale tells that, sadly, their quarrel ended badly for them both.
Both of them had been so loving to Lord Shiva that He blessed them. In the old story, the elephant went to live in Shiva's home. The spider was reborn as a baby prince in the Chola royal family. The baby was born with reddish eyes, and so he was named Kochengannan, the red-eyed one.
When he grew up, he became a great king, and he remembered how elephants had troubled his little shrine. So he built about seventy temples on high platforms, with narrow steps that an elephant could not climb, to keep every shrine safe. Many of these temples still stand. The king is remembered as one of the sixty-three Nayanmars.
