How to read the small numbers ² ³ ⁴ ·

Tamil script has one letter for each group of consonants, but Sanskrit has four sounds in each group (for example ka, kha, ga, gha). A small number after a letter tells you which sound to say.

no number · எண் இல்லைthe plain sound · சாதாரண ஒலி (ka, ta, pa)க = ka · த = ta · ப = pa
² (2)aspirated: the plain sound with a puff of breath · மூச்சுக் காற்றுடன் (kha, tha, pha)க² = kha · த² = tha · ப² = pha
³ (3)voiced: as in "go", "dog", "bat" · மென்மையான குரல் ஒலி (ga, da, ba)க³ = ga · த³ = da · ப³ = ba
⁴ (4)voiced with a puff of breath · குரலுடன் மூச்சுக் காற்று (gha, dha, bha)க⁴ = gha · த⁴ = dha · ப⁴ = bha

Examples from the verses: The same rule works for the other groups (ச, ட, ப and so on). Letters such as ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ ஶ are Grantha letters used for Sanskrit sounds, and you read them as in Sanskrit. A tick or dot over a letter (த்) means the consonant has no vowel.

In English

Lines 1–6: The first three verses call on Agni, Jatavedas: bring to me Lakshmi, golden in colour, graceful as a deer, wearing garlands of gold and silver, shining like the moon and made of gold; may I gain, through her who does not leave, gold, cattle, horses and people. They invoke Shri, seated in the middle of a chariot led by horses and awakened by the trumpeting of elephants. Lines 7–12: The next verses invoke Shri with a gentle smile, wrapped in golden walls, soft-hearted, blazing, content and giving contentment, seated on a lotus and lotus-coloured. Taking refuge with her, of moon-like fame, the poet prays that his poverty may go. Sun-coloured one, born of austerity, the bilva tree grew from you; may its fruits, through austerity, remove obstacles inside and outside and the spirit of misfortune. Lines 13–18: May Kubera, friend of the gods, and fame come to me with jewels; born in this land, may they give me fame and prosperity. I drive away hunger, thirst and impurity, which is misfortune; drive poverty and lack from my house. The group closes by invoking Shri here, whose gate is fragrant, who cannot be overcome, who always gives plenty, the queen of all beings. Lines 19–24: May the wishes of the mind and the truth of speech be ours; may animals and food come to me, and may Shri dwell in me with fame. Sage Kardama, you are Shri's child: stay with me and make Mother Shri, wearing a lotus garland, dwell in my family. May the waters create affection; Chiklita, live in my house, and make Mother Shri live in my family. Lines 25–30: Agni, bring to me Lakshmi, moist, standing in the lotus pond, nourishing, tawny, wearing a lotus garland, moon-like and golden; and bring to me Lakshmi wearing a golden garland and bright as the sun. The hymn closes by asking that, through her who does not leave, I may gain much gold, cattle, women servants, horses and people. Lines 31–31: Om. Peace, peace, peace.

About this text

Sri Suktam is a Vedic hymn that praises Goddess Shri, who is Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune and well-being. It is part of the Rig Veda's later section (the khila), and is recited in Lakshmi worship, at festivals such as Diwali and Varalakshmi Vratham, and on Fridays. It asks Agni to bring Lakshmi, and describes her in many images of gold, lotus, moon and light.

The hymn has 15 verses, which are 30 lines here, plus the closing peace line (31 lines). The meaning is given in 6 parts, each covering a group of lines. The verses ask for wealth in a Vedic sense, including cattle, horses and fame; this page reports what the verses say and makes no promises. Tradition adds more verses on the fruit of reciting; they are not included here.

The reading guide highlights words at a steady pace and is silent unless you turn the sound on. The meaning is read by a computer voice already on your device, so how it sounds depends on the voices installed. The wording of verses can differ slightly between printed editions.
