The Bhagavata Purana describes the highest home of Vishnu, called Vaikuntha, a realm free of fear and suffering. The Bhagavata Purana describes a highest home of Vishnu, called Vaikuntha, a realm free of fear, illusion and suffering. The text calls it the supreme place, adorable to all the worlds, the highest region where Vishnu resides. In this place, the lord is called Paramapadanathan, the lord of the highest abode, and he sits with the great goddess, called Periya Piratti. The Azhwars longed to reach it, and their verses speak of the joy of arriving at the lord's feet. On earth, people remember Vaikuntha in many ways. At Srirangam, for example, the gate to paradise, the Paramapada Vasal, is opened on Vaikunta Ekadashi, and large crowds pass through it, in memory of the longing for that highest home.

Like the Ocean of Milk, Paramapadam is not a place on earth. It is described in the Bhagavata Purana, composed between the eighth and tenth centuries, or perhaps as early as the sixth. The text says it is free of fear, illusion and suffering, and calls it the highest realm where Vishnu resides. It is the last of the 108 Divya Desams.

There is no building to visit. In the tradition, Vaikuntha is a world of light, peaceful and perfect. Many temples have a Paramapada Vasal, a 'gate to paradise', that is opened on Vaikunta Ekadashi, as a symbolic doorway to that realm.
