How to read the small numbers ² ³ ⁴ ·

Tamil script has one letter for each group of consonants, but Sanskrit has four sounds in each group (for example ka, kha, ga, gha). A small number after a letter tells you which sound to say.

no number · எண் இல்லைthe plain sound · சாதாரண ஒலி (ka, ta, pa)க = ka · த = ta · ப = pa
² (2)aspirated: the plain sound with a puff of breath · மூச்சுக் காற்றுடன் (kha, tha, pha)க² = kha · த² = tha · ப² = pha
³ (3)voiced: as in "go", "dog", "bat" · மென்மையான குரல் ஒலி (ga, da, ba)க³ = ga · த³ = da · ப³ = ba
⁴ (4)voiced with a puff of breath · குரலுடன் மூச்சுக் காற்று (gha, dha, bha)க⁴ = gha · த⁴ = dha · ப⁴ = bha

Examples from the verses: The same rule works for the other groups (ச, ட, ப and so on). Letters such as ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ ஶ are Grantha letters used for Sanskrit sounds, and you read them as in Sanskrit. A tick or dot over a letter (த்) means the consonant has no vowel.

In English

Lines 1–4: Salutation to the Sun, the one eye of the whole world, the cause of its arising, keeping and ending, whose form is the three Vedas, and who is Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in one. Lines 5–10: Rama stood tired from battle and lost in thought, and saw Ravana before him, ready to fight. The sage Agastya, who had come with the gods to watch the battle, came to Rama and said: Rama, hear an ancient secret by which you will overcome all your enemies in battle. Lines 11–16: It is the Aditya Hrudayam, a sacred hymn. The text says it destroys enemies and brings victory, and that it may be recited every day. It calls it the most auspicious of the auspicious, the destroyer of sin, the one that calms worry and grief and lengthens life. Agastya tells Rama to honour the Sun, the lord of the world, who rises with his rays and whom gods and demons bow to. Lines 17–22: The hymn says he is the form of all the gods, full of light, and protects the worlds with his rays. It names him as Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, Indra, Kubera, Time, Yama, the Moon and the lord of the waters, and also as the ancestors, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Ashvins, the Maruts, Manu, the wind, fire and the maker of the seasons and of light. Lines 23–34: It lists many names of the Sun, such as Aditya, Savita, Surya, Pushan, Bhaskara, Divakara, Ravi and Martanda, the one with a thousand rays and seven horses, who drives away darkness, the lord of the sky, who knows the Vedas and is the friend of cloud and rain. It ends this part with a bow to the lord of the stars and planets, who has twelve forms. Lines 35–52: It bows to the eastern mountain and the western mountain, to the lord of the hosts of light and the lord of the day, to the one who is victory and brings good fortune, who has green horses and a thousand rays, and says again and again: salutations. It praises him as the destroyer of darkness, cold and enemies, and as the witness of the world. He ends and creates beings, gives heat with his rays, sends rain, stays awake while all sleep, and is the Vedas, the sacrifices and their fruit. Lines 53–58: Agastya tells Rama that a person who sings his praise in troubles, in hardship, in the wilderness and in fear will not be overcome. With a steady mind, honour this lord of the gods and of the world, repeat this three times, and you will win your battles; in this very moment you will defeat Ravana. Having said this, Agastya went away as he had come. Lines 59–66: Hearing this, Rama was freed from sorrow, was glad, and kept it in mind. He faced the Sun, recited it, sipped water three times to become pure, and took up his bow. Seeing Ravana, he went to fight with a glad heart. Then the Sun, looking at Rama with delight, knew that the lord of the night-wanderers was near his end and, standing among the gods, said: make haste.
