How to read the small numbers ² ³ ⁴ ·
Tamil script has one letter for each group of consonants, but Sanskrit has four sounds in each group (for example ka, kha, ga, gha). A small number after a letter tells you which sound to say.
|---|---|---|
| no number · எண் இல்லை | the plain sound · சாதாரண ஒலி (ka, ta, pa) | க = ka · த = ta · ப = pa |
| ² (2) | aspirated: the plain sound with a puff of breath · மூச்சுக் காற்றுடன் (kha, tha, pha) | க² = kha · த² = tha · ப² = pha |
| ³ (3) | voiced: as in "go", "dog", "bat" · மென்மையான குரல் ஒலி (ga, da, ba) | க³ = ga · த³ = da · ப³ = ba |
| ⁴ (4) | voiced with a puff of breath · குரலுடன் மூச்சுக் காற்று (gha, dha, bha) | க⁴ = gha · த⁴ = dha · ப⁴ = bha |
Examples from the verses: The same rule works for the other groups (ச, ட, ப and so on). Letters such as ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ ஶ are Grantha letters used for Sanskrit sounds, and you read them as in Sanskrit. A tick or dot over a letter (த்) means the consonant has no vowel.

In English
Lines 1–4: The poet cleans the mirror of his mind with the dust of his teacher's lotus feet and sings the pure glory of Rama, which gives the four aims of life. Knowing himself to be without wisdom, he remembers the son of the wind and asks for strength, wisdom and knowledge, and for his troubles and faults to be removed. Lines 5–16: The meditation verses: they bow to the son of the wind, the home of matchless strength, with a body like a golden mountain, fire to the forest of demons, first among the wise, a store of every virtue, lord of the monkeys, and Rama's dear devotee. He crossed the sea as if it were a cow's hoofprint and made demons like gnats, and is a jewel in the garland of the Ramayana. Wherever Rama's name is sung, he stands there with folded hands and tears in his eyes, as swift as thought and the wind, master of his senses and best among the wise. Lines 17–26: Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of knowledge and virtue, and to the monkey lord who lights up the three worlds. He is called the messenger of Rama, the home of matchless strength, Anjani's son and the wind's son; strong as a thunderbolt, he drives away bad thoughts and is the companion of the good. His body is golden, he wears fine clothes and earrings and has curly hair, with a mace and a flag in his hands and the sacred thread over his shoulder. Lines 27–36: The poem says your glory, born of Shiva and Kesari's son, is honoured by the whole world. You are wise, virtuous, very clever and eager to do Rama's work. You love to hear the Lord's stories, and Rama, Lakshmana and Sita live in your heart. You showed Sita a tiny form, took a huge form and burned Lanka, and with a terrible form you destroyed the demons and finished Rama's tasks. Lines 37–46: You brought the life-restoring herb and revived Lakshmana, and Rama in joy embraced you. He praised you greatly, and said you are as dear to him as Bharata, and that a thousand mouths sing your glory. Sages like Sanaka, Brahma, Narada, Sarasvati and Shesha, and Yama, Kubera, the guardians of the directions, the poets and the scholars could not tell your glory in full. Lines 47–56: You joined Sugriva to Rama and helped him gain his kingdom, and Vibhishana took your advice and became king of Lanka. You swallowed the sun, thousands of miles away, thinking it a sweet fruit; carrying Rama's ring in your mouth, you crossed the sea, and it is no wonder. Every hard task in the world becomes easy by your grace. Lines 57–66: You guard the door of Rama, and no one can enter without your leave. Those who take refuge in you gain every comfort, and with you as protector there is nothing to fear. You alone can hold your own splendour, and the three worlds tremble at your roar. The text says that ghosts do not come near when your name, great hero, is spoken, and that illness and pain leave those who repeat your name without stopping. Lines 67–76: The text says Hanuman frees from trouble those who remember him in thought, deed and word. Rama is king of the ascetics, and you completed all his tasks. Whoever comes to you with a wish receives boundless fruit, and your glory is known in all four ages. You protect the good, destroy the demons and are very dear to Rama. Lines 77–86: Sita gave you the boon of the eight siddhis and nine treasures, and you carry the medicine of Rama's name and are always Raghupati's servant. The text says that whoever sings your praise reaches Rama and forgets the sorrow of many births, and at the end goes to Rama's home. It says there is no need to think of other gods, for serving Hanuman gives every comfort. Lines 87–96: The text says that troubles and pains end for those who remember mighty Hanuman. Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman: be gracious to us like a teacher. It says that whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bonds and gains great joy, and that those who read the Hanuman Chalisa will succeed, with Shiva, lord of Gauri, as witness. Tulsidas, always the servant of Hari, ends: Lord, make your home in my heart. Lines 97–99: Son of the wind, remover of troubles, form of good fortune, live in my heart with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, king of the gods. Say, brothers: victory to Rama, the lord of Sita; victory to Hanuman, son of the wind; victory to all the good.

The Hanuman Chalisa is a 40-verse prayer to Hanuman by the poet Tulsidas, written in the Awadhi language around the 16th century. It is one of the most widely recited prayers in India.
