The Lord who rose from a sacrifice and sleeps under water
Brahma once performed a great fire sacrifice here, and the goddess Saraswati, in anger, turned herself into a roaring river and rushed towards the place to wash the sacrifice away. Vishnu lay down across the river's path and held back the flood, so that the sacrifice could go on. When the fire rose, the lord himself came out of it, shining like a thousand suns. He appeared inside a fig (atti) tree, and the hill here came to be called Attigiri. The image carved from fig wood, Atthi Varadar, was later lowered into the temple tank, according to tradition, and rests in a chamber beneath the water. Once every forty years, the image is raised and worshipped for forty-eight days before returning to rest. People wait their whole lives for that chance to see him.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple has around 350 inscriptions from the Chola, Pandya, Kakatiya, Hoysala, Vijayanagara and other dynasties. The Cholas renovated it in 1053, and it was expanded under Kulottunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola. When an invasion was expected in 1688, the main image was sent away to safety at Udayarpalayam and brought back later. The saint Thirukachi Nambi, a devotee of Varadharaja, is said to have served the lord with such love that he could speak with him. The teacher Ramanuja is also closely linked with this temple.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
This is the biggest temple in Kanchipuram, covering about 9.5 hectares, with three outer enclosures, 32 shrines, 19 vimanas and 389 pillared halls. There are 96 ornate pillars showing scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The sanctum faces west and is entered through a seven-tiered gateway tower 40 metres high. Silver and gold lizards, said to have been placed by Indra, are a famous feature. A sculpture of a chain carved from a single stone is another well-known marvel.

- Kanchipuram is about 70 km from Chennai. The temple is in the Vishnu Kanchi area on the east side of town, near several other Divya Desams.
- Plan most of a day if you want to visit the Divya Desams of Kanchipuram. This is the largest and busiest.
- Dress modestly, and allow for queues on weekends and festival days.
