The story
A prince, a hunter and a temple of stone
A Pallava king and queen had prayed for a child for many years but were childless. The local tradition says that a sage named Bharadvaja once fell in love with a heavenly dancer. They had a son, but the sage went back to his meditation and the dancer returned to heaven, leaving the child alone on the earth. Shiva and Vishnu decided to look after him. One day, Vishnu took the form of a hunter and carried the child to the childless Pallava king and queen. The boy grew up to be a king himself, and tradition says he built the great stone temple in honour of Vishnu, which is why the temple carries his name, Parameswara. Scholars say that history may differ, but the story shows how much this temple means to the people of Kanchipuram.
History
Scholars differ on when it was built. One places it in 690 under the Pallava king Nandivarman II, while others date it to the late 8th century, around 770 to 775, perhaps as a Vaishnava response to the grand Shaiva Kailasanatha temple built fifty years earlier. Thirumangai Azhwar, a contemporary, composed ten hymns about it, which gives historians a useful anchor for dating the temple. The legend of a Pallava prince named Paramesvaravarman II is a traditional account that differs from the historical record.
Architecture
The temple is an early example of Dravidian architecture, built in the form of a three-dimensional lotus-and-wheel mandala. The vimana has a stepped, pyramid-shaped roof. A drainage moat around its base was designed to symbolise the primordial Ocean of Milk around the mountain of Vaikuntha. The three sanctuaries house Vishnu in three poses: seated on the ground floor, reclining on the first floor (open to devotees only on ekadashi days) and standing on the second floor, which is closed. The cloister walls carry a sequence of relief panels telling the history of the Pallava dynasty, beginning with the legendary line from Brahma to Drona and Ashwatthama and moving on to the actual Pallava kings.
