Then Bhoothath Azhwar arrived looking for shelter, so they both sat. Then Pey Azhwar came, and now all three had to stand, squeezed close.பூதத்தாழ்வார் ஒதுங்க வர, இருவரும் அமர்ந்தனர். பேயாழ்வார் வந்ததும் மூவரும் நெருக்கமாக நின்றனர்.
In the dark, they felt a fourth person squeezing in among them! When lightning flashed, they saw a gentle, shining face. The fourth one in the dark
It was a stormy evening in Thirukkoyilur, and the sky grew dark in the middle of the day. Poigai Azhwar found a small hiding place with just enough room for one person to lie down. Soon Bhoothath Azhwar arrived looking for shelter, and Poigai made space so that both could sit. Then Pey Azhwar came, and there was no more room, so all three stood. In the dark, they could not see each other. But then they felt a fourth person squeezing in among them. When the lightning flashed, the three Azhwars saw a gentle, shining face, and realised it was the lord himself. Poigai wished to keep seeing that face, so he sang a hundred verses, imagining the whole earth as a lamp, the sea as the oil and the sun as the flame. Bhoothath and Pey followed with their own hundred verses each.

Historyவரலாறு
The Bhagavata Purana tells how Vishnu came as Vamana to a generous king named Mahabali, and the temple is built around that story. The temple is praised by Thirumazhisai Azhwar and Thirumangai Azhwar, and the first three Azhwars are linked with the place through the legend of the small shelter. It is one of the Panchakanna Kshetrams, which are all temples associated with Krishna, four in Chola Nadu and one in Nadu Nadu.

The temple has an eleven-tiered gateway tower 59 metres (194 feet) high, the third tallest in Tamil Nadu after those of Srirangam and Srivilliputhur. It covers about five acres and the streets around it hold houses. The main image of Ulagalantha Perumal, made of wood from the 'tharu' tree, has one foot raised in the great stride. The images of the Azhwars are in the hall before the sanctum, and the image of Vamana is behind the main image.
