A little boy named Vamana asked the king, Mahabali, for three steps of land. The king smiled and agreed. The great lord who became small
When Vamana, the little Brahmin boy, asked King Mahabali for three steps of land, the king smiled and agreed. Then the boy grew and grew, until his first step covered the earth and his second the sky. King Mahabali was lying at his feet, and from there he could see nothing of the great cosmic form. He folded his hands and asked the lord to take a smaller shape, so that he could look on him. The lord agreed with a smile. He appeared as the serpent Adisesha in a small shrine of this temple. This small shrine is the Tiruoorakam. People say it is a place where couples who dream of a child come to pray, and where even the greatest figure can be seen with a humble heart.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple is described as the oldest in Kanchipuram. The earliest inscription is from 846 during the rule of Nandivarman III, and it was developed further by Rajendra Chola I. The inscriptions refer to the main deity by various names. The temple is praised by Thirumangai Azhwar in one hymn of the Thirunedunthandagam.

The temple covers about 60,000 square feet and has a three-tiered main gateway with seven kalasas. The central shrine, with the huge image of Ulagalantha Perumal, is commonly called Peragam, and the smaller shrine with the Adisesha image is the Tiruoorakam. Four Divya Desams stand within this complex.
