The lord called the thief
Names in the Divya Desams are often playful, and the name of the lord in this small shrine is one of the most surprising: Kalvar, which means the thief. It is a loving name, the kind a child might give a parent who has stolen the child's heart. The poet Thirumangai Azhwar sang about the shrine, and the worshippers still call the lord by this name. He stands facing north in the second enclosure of the great temple, with his consort Kamalavalli Thayar. Two tanks, called Gauri Tatakam and Taratara Tatakam, are linked with the shrine, and the roof of the sanctum is the Puskala Vimana. One way to read the name is that the lord steals away worries, a gentle kind of thief who leaves you with more than you had.

Historyவரலாறு
Tirukkaravanam is one of four Divya Desams within the Ulagalantha Perumal temple. The shrine is praised by Thirumangai Azhwar in one hymn of the Thirunedunthandagam, and the temple complex is described as the oldest in Kanchipuram. The whole complex covers about 60,000 square feet, with a three-tiered gateway tower and seven kalasas.

The shrine is in the second enclosure of the complex. The presiding deity, Kalvar, faces north, and his consort is Kamalavalli Thayar. The tanks associated with it are the Gauri Tatakam and the Taratara Tatakam, and the vimana is called the Puskala Vimana.
