Long ago, a sage named Garga came to this place to meditate. The lord was pleased with his steady effort, and in time the sage found the knowledge he had been looking for. The place was named Garagaham in his memory, and over the years the name softened into Karakam. The lord of this shrine is called Karunakara, the one who is a mine of compassion. He is shown seated upon the serpent Adisesha with his consort Padmamani Nachiyar beside him. A visitor might take it as a gentle prompt to sit quietly and ask for a clear mind.
அறிவு பெற்ற முனிவர்

Historyவரலாறு
Tirukkarakam is one of four Divya Desams within the Ulagalantha Perumal temple, which the historian Nagaswamy describes as the oldest temple in Kanchipuram, with an inscription from 846. Thirumangai Azhwar sang of it in one hymn of the Thirunedunthandagam. The whole complex covers about 60,000 square feet, and the temple as a whole is entered through a three-tiered gateway tower with seven kalasas.

The shrine is located in the third enclosure of the temple. Karunakara Perumal faces north and is seated on Adisesha, with Padmamani Nachiyar as his consort. The tank is called the Agraya Tirtham, and the vimana is the Vamana Vimana, also known as the Ramaya Vimana.
