How to read the small numbers ² ³ ⁴ ·
Tamil script has one letter for each group of consonants, but Sanskrit has four sounds in each group (for example ka, kha, ga, gha). A small number after a letter tells you which sound to say.
|---|---|---|
| no number · எண் இல்லை | the plain sound · சாதாரண ஒலி (ka, ta, pa) | க = ka · த = ta · ப = pa |
| ² (2) | aspirated: the plain sound with a puff of breath · மூச்சுக் காற்றுடன் (kha, tha, pha) | க² = kha · த² = tha · ப² = pha |
| ³ (3) | voiced: as in "go", "dog", "bat" · மென்மையான குரல் ஒலி (ga, da, ba) | க³ = ga · த³ = da · ப³ = ba |
| ⁴ (4) | voiced with a puff of breath · குரலுடன் மூச்சுக் காற்று (gha, dha, bha) | க⁴ = gha · த⁴ = dha · ப⁴ = bha |
Examples from the verses: The same rule works for the other groups (ச, ட, ப and so on). Letters such as ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ ஶ are Grantha letters used for Sanskrit sounds, and you read them as in Sanskrit. A tick or dot over a letter (த்) means the consonant has no vowel.

In English
Lines 1–8: As a child you swallowed the sun, and the three worlds went dark; the world was afraid and no one could remove the trouble. The gods came and pleaded, and you let the sun go and ended the distress. Who in the world does not know that Sankata Mochana, the remover of troubles, is your name? Lines 9–14: Because of Bali's fear Sugriva lived on the mountain; you went as a Brahmin, brought the Lord Rama and ended your devotee's sorrow. Lines 15–20: When the monkeys went with Angada to search for Sita, they said they would not live if they returned without news. When all were tired on the shore of the sea, you brought news of Sita and saved their lives. Lines 21–26: Ravana terrified Sita and the demonesses tormented her. Then you killed many of the night-walkers, and when Sita asked the ashoka tree for fire, you gave her the Lord's ring and ended her sorrow. Lines 27–32: The arrow of Ravana's son struck Lakshmana, and he was near death. You brought the physician Sushena with his house, carried away the mountain of Drona and gave the herb, saving Lakshmana's life. Lines 33–38: In the war Ravana bound them all with the serpent noose, and Rama and the whole army fell into a great trouble. You brought Garuda, cut the bonds and removed the fear. Lines 39–44: Ahiravana took Rama and his brother to the underworld and planned to offer them to the goddess. You went there and destroyed Ahiravana and his army. Lines 45–50: You have done great things for the gods, mighty one. What trouble of mine, a poor man, can you not remove? Great Lord Hanuman, quickly remove whatever trouble we have. Lines 51–52: Red body, red tail, a body like a thunderbolt, destroyer of demons: victory, victory, victory to the monkey hero.

Sankata Mochana Hanuman Ashtak is a hymn of eight verses to Hanuman by Tulsidas, who also wrote the Hanuman Chalisa. It is often recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
