The river who needed to be cleansed
All the rivers of the land come to the Kaveri to wash away their burdens, so the Kaveri herself wondered who would wash hers. She went to Brahma and asked what to do. Brahma told her to worship Vishnu, so she travelled to a quiet place where she prayed for a long time. At last she felt light and clean again. People say a parrot in the nearby forest had a similar fate. It was devoted to Vishnu, and a hunter shot it down. The lord came to its side and told the bird the story of its past life. From these stories, the people of Thirukoodalur learned that the god who protects the world comes down for every living creature, from a mighty river to a small green bird.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple is believed to have been built by the Cholas in the late 8th century, with later additions by Vijayanagara kings and Madurai Nayaks. A legend names King Ambarisha as the builder, and the presiding deity is sometimes called Ambarisha Varadhar. A temple chariot called the Ambarisha Ratha, renovated by Rani Mangammal, was used until the 1940s. A statue of the queen stands in the temple.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
A brick wall encloses the temple and its water tanks, and there is a three-tiered gateway tower. The main shrine shows Jagad Rakshaka Perumal standing, with a small gap in the sanctum near the image that tradition says marks the centre of the earth. The goddess Pushpavalli's shrine faces south. The sanctum roof is called the Suddha Satwa Vimana, and there are separate shrines for Ramanuja, the Azhwars, Andal and Garuda.
