Shiva told Nandi to pray in a forest by the Kaveri. Nandi prayed with all his heart. In the same forest, the goddess Lakshmi was also praying.காவிரி அருகே காட்டில் தவம் செய்யச் சிவன் சொல்ல, நந்தி முழு மனதுடன் வேண்டினான். அதே காட்டில் திருமகளும் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தாள்.

The bull who felt too hot
Nandi, the faithful bull of Shiva, once forgot to show proper respect to the doorkeepers of Vishnu. The doorkeepers cursed him, and Nandi felt a terrible heat in his body that would not cool. He went to Shiva, who told him to do penance in a forest called Shenbakaranyam near the river Kaveri. Nandi went and prayed there with all his heart. In the same forest, the goddess Lakshmi was doing her own penance for a place near Vishnu's heart. Vishnu was moved by both, and he relieved Nandi's curse. Lakshmi was welcomed to his chest. The people of this village say the temple is a rare meeting place of devotion to Shiva and to Vishnu, because Nandi, who belongs to the first, stands in the sanctum of the second.
சூடு தாங்காத எருது
சிவபெருமானின் வாகனமான நந்தி, ஒருமுறை திருமாலின் வாயிற்காவலர்களுக்கு உரிய மரியாதை செய்ய மறந்தான். காவலர்கள் அவனைச் சபித்தனர்; நந்தியின் உடலில் தாங்க முடியாத வெப்பம் குடிகொண்டது. சிவனிடம் சென்றபோது காவிரி அருகே செண்பகாரண்யம் என்ற காட்டில் தவம் செய்யச் சொன்னார். நந்தி முழு மனதுடன் தவம் செய்தான். அதே காட்டில் திருமகள் திருமாலின் மார்பில் இடம் பெற வேண்டித் தவம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்தாள். இருவர் தவத்தாலும் மகிழ்ந்த திருமால் நந்தியின் சாபத்தை நீக்கினார்; திருமகளைத் தம் மார்பில் ஏற்றார். சைவ, வைணவ பக்தியின் அபூர்வச் சந்திப்பிடம் இது என்பர்; ஏனெனில் சிவனுக்குரிய நந்தி திருமால் கருவறையில் நிற்கிறான்.
Historyவரலாறு
The village was once a Chola capital, and the temple is also called Sundara Chola Vinnagaram because of gifts from the Chola king Sundara Chola (957 to 970). Tradition adds that the king Sibi worshipped here, and that the Pallava king Nandivarman is linked with the place. The temple received support under the Thanjavur Nayaks as well.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
A three-tiered gateway tower leads to the temple. Because of the legend, the tank is called Nandi Theertham, the roof of the sanctum is the Nandi Vimana and another pond is the Nandi Pushkarani. An image of Nandi stands inside the sanctum, which is unusual for a Vishnu temple, and an image of Brahma is also shown. Shenbagavalli Thayar has her own shrine, with her image facing west.
