The storyகதை
Long ago, Shiva was carrying a heavy worry that would not go away. He travelled from temple to temple looking for peace.
When he came to Thirukandiyur, he bathed in the temple pool and prayed to Vishnu. At last the heavy burden fell away, and he felt light and happy.

The story
The skull that would not let go
Brahma and Shiva once each had five heads. One day, in a misunderstanding, Shiva grew angry and removed one of Brahma's heads. But the head stuck to his hand and would not come away, because the deed had brought a heavy curse upon him. Shiva wandered the land seeking relief and visited Vishnu at Thirukarambanur, where he was given alms. Even so, the skull stayed with him until he came to Thirukandiyur. There he bathed in the temple tank, worshipped Vishnu, and at last the skull fell from his hand. The tank was then called the Kapala Theertham, the pool of the skull. Shiva was so grateful that he built the temple and another one for himself nearby. The people here say that anyone who feels weighed down by a wrong they cannot undo may find some peace by praying at this place.
History
The temple is believed to have been built by the Cholas in the late 8th century, with additions by Vijayanagara kings and Madurai Nayaks. It was renovated in 1984 and again in 2003 under the guidance of the head of the Thirukudanthai Vedanta Ramanuja Mahadesikan lineage. The oldest images in the temple are those of Santana Gopala and Navaneetha Krishna. Tradition holds that the temple is older than Srirangam. A local belief also says that Tipu Sultan fought and won a battle here, and later became a devotee.
