The clay pot that saved the Vedas
At the end of an age, when the whole world was about to dissolve, Brahma grew worried. He asked Vishnu how he could keep safe the tools of creation and all the sacred Vedas. Vishnu told him to put them in a strong clay pot. Brahma tried clay from all around the earth, but none was strong enough. At last he took sand from a quiet place called Thirucherai, and the pot he made there held firm. The Vedas, and everything needed to begin a new world, were saved. The place was named Sara Kshetram, the place of the essence. The Kaveri river is also said to have prayed here, and Vishnu is worshipped as Saranatha, the protector. People say that anything entrusted to this place is held safe.

Historyவரலாறு
Two old inscriptions survive: one from the Chola ruler Parakesari Varman (906 to 946) and one from the 1700s. The temple is believed to be very old, with contributions from the Cholas, the Vijayanagara empire and the Madurai Nayaks. Some Chola-period images have crowns that show the influence of Buddhist art in the region, and the bronze image of Sita is considered a fine example of Chola art of the 9th and 10th centuries.

The temple compound is about 380 feet long and 380 feet wide, and the temple tank in front is the same size. A five-tiered tower 37 metres high rises through the great compound wall, and a three-tiered tower stands in the first enclosure. The main image, Saranatha, is a 12-foot standing figure. Stone figures of Kaveri and the sage Markandeya stand in the sanctum, and the festival image is shown with Bhudevi, Sridevi and Niladevi. Saranayaki Thayar's shrine is next to the sanctum.
