A farewell to a brave friend
When Ravana carried Sita away through the sky, a great eagle named Jatayu flew up to stop him. Jatayu was old but very brave, and he fought with all his strength until Ravana wounded him badly and he fell to the earth. Rama and Lakshmana found him lying on the ground. With his last breath, Jatayu told them what had happened and which way Ravana had gone. Then he died. Rama grieved for him as for a family member and prepared to perform the final rites. There was a custom that a husband performs such rites together with his wife, but Sita was not there. Then Bhumadevi, the earth goddess, appeared from a golden lotus to stand beside him. People say this is the place. It stands as a reminder that courage and loyalty deserve to be honoured.

Historyவரலாறு
The Brahmanda Purana and the Padma Purana are said to describe the legend of this temple. It was built by the Cholas and added to by later kings. Today it is administered by the Ahobila Mutt and follows the Vadakalai tradition of Sri Vaishnavism, following the Pancharatra Agama, with hereditary priests.

The main image of Rama is the unusual feature: he is shown with four arms, two of them holding the conch and the discus, and the source describes this as the only place where Rama is shown this way. He is called Valvil Ramar, 'Rama with the great bow'.
