A wealthy man loved serving the lord, but the people who worked for him took advantage of his kindness and cheated him until he had nothing left. That night, Vishnu came to him in a dream and told him not to worry. The next morning, the man did what the dream had said. He took a measuring pot and went with all the workers to the bank of the Kollidam river. There an old man was waiting, and he began to measure out sand from the river, giving each worker a share according to how much work he had done. The workers were astonished. For those who had worked honestly, the sand turned into precious stones. For those who had cheated, it stayed as sand. The angry workers chased the old man, and at that moment the lord showed his true form. The workers were ashamed, and understood their mistake.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple was built in Chola times, and the sources credit Aditya Chola. Local tradition says that it was once buried under the earth. At the same time, a princess of Kashmir was suffering from a magician's spell. The lord appeared in the king's dream, told him to uncover the submerged temple and renovate it, and the princess recovered. Because of this, worship here is believed to give comfort to people who feel tormented.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
The temple has a three-tiered gateway tower and a rectangular enclosure. It is said to follow the pattern of the Srirangam temple, with seven enclosures, though these have worn away with time. The sanctum roof is called the Pranava Vimana, and the image of the lord is visible only down to the knee. A local tradition connected to Srirangam says that the world will end when the feet of the image emerge. There are carvings of Kamadhenu, the divine cow, and her daughter Nandini, and a Hanuman image called Virasudarshana Anjaneya. Footprints are carved to mark visits by Hanuman and by Rama.
