The lord who guards the treasure
Kubera, the lord of wealth, once let his eyes rest on the goddess Parvati in a way he should not have. Shiva cursed him, and Kubera lost his wealth. He was ashamed and begged forgiveness. Shiva and Parvati told him to go to Thirukkolur and perform penance. Kubera went and prayed, and the lord of this place, Vaithamanidhi Perumal, gave him back his great wealth. The image of the lord here is shown reclining, with a measuring pot as his pillow, looking at the palm of his left hand, as if checking on the place where the treasure is. People believe that those who pray here are blessed with enough wealth for their needs. It is a story about regaining what we have lost through honest repentance.
செல்வத்தைக் காக்கும் இறைவன்
செல்வத்தின் அதிபதியான குபேரன் ஒருமுறை பார்வதி தேவியை முறையல்லாத பார்வையால் நோக்கினான். சிவபெருமான் அவனைச் சபித்தார்; குபேரன் தன் செல்வத்தை இழந்தான். வெட்கமடைந்த அவன் மன்னிப்பு வேண்டினான். சிவனும் பார்வதியும் அவனைத் திருக்கோளூர் சென்று தவம் செய்யுமாறு கூறினர். குபேரன் அங்கு சென்று வேண்ட, இவ்விடத்து இறைவனான வைத்தமாநிதிப் பெருமாள் அவனுடைய பெரும் செல்வத்தை மீண்டும் வழங்கினார். இங்கு இறைவன் சயனக் கோலத்தில் உள்ளார்; மரக்காலைத் தலையணையாகக் கொண்டு, செல்வம் இருக்கும் இடத்தைச் சரிபார்ப்பது போல் இடது உள்ளங்கையைப் பார்த்தபடி இருக்கிறார். இங்கு வேண்டுவோர் தம் தேவைக்குப் போதுமான செல்வத்தைப் பெற்று வாழ்வர் என்று மக்கள் நம்புகின்றனர். நேர்மையான மனந்திரும்புதலால் இழந்ததை மீண்டும் பெறலாம் என்பதே இக்கதையின் செய்தி.
Historyவரலாறு
A second legend tells of King Ambarisha, who gave up his crown to become a hermit, and whose devotion was tested by the sage Durvasa. The original structure is believed to have been refurbished by Rani Mangammal (1689 to 1704). The temple is one of the Navatirupati, revered by Nammazhwar, and the Brahmanda Purana's chapter on the Navatirupati describes it. It is a place linked to the poet Madhurakavi Azhwar, whose image is taken in procession during the festival.

The temple has two enclosures. Vaithamanidhi Perumal, the main deity, reclines facing east, with a measuring pot (marakkal) as his pillow. He looks at the palm of his left hand to keep watch over the location of the wealth. The temple stands on the bank of the Thamiraparani on the Tiruchendur to Tirunelveli route, built in the Dravidian style, with shrines inside rectangular granite walls.
