The story
A pot of sweet cakes for a hungry lord
A king named Ubhamanyu once upset the sage Durvasa and was cursed to lose his strength. To be freed, he was told to feed a hundred thousand people every day. He did, faithfully, until one day an old man came to his gate and asked for a meal. The king served him, and then more, and more, but nothing could fill the old man. The cooks ran out of food, and the king was bewildered. Then the old man said he would be satisfied only with a whole pot of sweet cakes called appam. The king hurried to fulfil the wish, and as soon as the old man ate, he revealed himself as Vishnu. The curse was lifted. The lord has been called Appakkudathaan, the one of the pot of cakes, ever since.
History
The village is called Koviladi because it lies downstream of Srirangam, whose temple Vaishnavas simply call 'the temple' (kovil). In Chola times the place was known as Perunagar, which gave the name Thiruppernagar. An inscription from the 18th year of the reign of Aditya Chola survives, along with several others. Nammazhwar's verses describe the place as a home of Vedic scholars.

The temple stands on a raised base and is reached by 21 steps. The three-tiered gateway tower faces west, and so does the main image of Appala Ranganathar, shown reclining and holding a sacred pot in his right hand, with Bhumadevi and Kamalavalli Thayar beside him. Statues of Ubhamanyu and Durvasa stand in the sanctum. A walkway circles the sanctum. A historian has noted that its arrangement of subsidiary deities is typical of Ranganatha temples built in the 9th and 10th centuries.
