Nakula, one of the Pandava twin brothers, is said to have set up an image of Krishna at this spot on the Pamba river. Each year the temple holds a festival that lasts fifty-one days to remember that day. Twenty-one elephants in a row

The temple is one of the five ancient shrines of the Chengannur area connected with the Mahabharata. The Pamba river lies near the temple, giving the deity his name. An annual Thiruvaymozhi festival commemorates Nammazhwar, the saint-poet. The annual 51-day festival marking the installation of the Krishna image ends with Gajamela, a parade of 21 caparisoned elephants.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
The temple is built in the Kerala style, with a two-storey gateway tower whose upper storey has wooden lattices covering the Kottupura, the drum hall. A rectangular wall, the kshetra-madilluka, encloses all the shrines, and a metal-plated flagpost and a light post stand in line with the sanctum. The Chuttuambalam is the outer pavilion within the temple wall.
