The story
The lord of the lotus navel
In the great temple of Thiruvananthapuram, the lord lies on a couch formed by the serpent Ananta, whose five hoods curve inward to show deep thought. From the lord's navel rises a lotus, and on the lotus sits Brahma, the creator. The lord's right hand rests over a Shiva lingam, which people read as a sign of the unity of the divine. The image is believed to be made from 12,008 shaligrama stones from the Gandaki river in Nepal. Because the image is so large, visitors see it through three doors: one shows the head and hand, one the middle, and one the feet. The Sangam epic Silappathikaram mentions this temple, and the poet Nammazhwar praised it as a heavenly place, with walls and streets of pure gold.
History
The temple is mentioned in Sangam literature, including the Silappathikaram, and the poet-saint Nammazhwar praised it in the 9th century. It is believed that the sage Parashurama purified and venerated the image in the Dvapara Yuga, and entrusted the administration to seven Potti families. The temple is referred to as 'Syanandoorapura' in the Puranas and is one of the 108 Divya Desams.
