The story
The charioteer with a mark on his face
In the great war of the Mahabharata, Krishna promised not to take up any weapon, but only to drive Arjuna's chariot. During a fierce fight between Arjuna and the grand old warrior Bhishma, Bhishma's arrows flew so thick that one struck Krishna's face. People say the image in this temple still shows the mark of that arrow. Krishna is called Parthasarathi here, the charioteer of Partha (Arjuna). This place was once full of lilies, a pond of lilies, allikeni in Tamil, which gave the area its name. The seven sages are said to have worshipped five forms of the lord here. The story gives courage to listeners: even the gentlest helper stands with us in a battle, and sometimes takes a hit for us.
History
The temple was originally built by the Pallavas between the 6th and 8th centuries and later expanded by the Cholas and by the Vijayanagara kings in the 15th century. It has inscriptions dating from the 8th century, presumably from the reign of Dantivarman, a devotee of Vishnu. Thirumangai Azhwar attributes the temple's building to a Pallava king. The temple was restored in 1564 when new shrines were built. According to a biography of Ramanuja, his father Asuri Kesava Somayaji is said to have performed a ritual for a child at the temple pond, Kairavini, and prayed to Parthasarathy.
