The storyகதை
The name Thiruneermalai means the sacred hill surrounded by water. After writing the Ramayana, the sage Valmiki climbed the hill to pray.'திருநீர்மலை' என்றால் நீர் சூழ்ந்த புனித மலை. இராமாயணம் எழுதியபின் வால்மீகி முனிவர் மலை ஏறி வழிபட்டார்.
When he came down, he wished to see Rama himself. Thiruneermalai means the sacred hill surrounded by water, and there is a story about it. The sage Valmiki, after writing the Ramayana, climbed the hill to pray to Ranganatha. The lord appeared before him with the whole family: Lakshmi as Sita, the serpent Adisesha as Lakshmana, the conch as Bharata, the discus as Shatrughna, and Garuda as Hanuman. Years later, the poet-saint Thirumangai Azhwar climbed the same hill, and the water around it rose and kept him there for six months. He sang about the temple while he waited. His verses mention four poses of the lord at this one place: standing, lying, sitting and walking. So many forms, in one hill, make it feel like a small world.

The temple is counted among the eight 'Ashta Svayam Vyakta Kshetrams', Vishnu temples where the lord is believed to have manifested himself. The Thiruneermalai complex consists of two temples, the Neervanna Perumal temple at the foot of the hill and the Ranganatha temple at the top. Thirumangai Azhwar and Bhoothath Azhwar praised it in their verses. The complex covers about 15 acres.

The temple at the foot of the hill covers about three acres and has Neervanna Perumal in a standing pose. The hilltop temple has Ranganatha as presiding deity, and the roof above the sanctum is called the Ranga Vimana. Narasimha is seated and Trivikrama is shown walking, so the complex shows the lord in four poses: standing, lying, sitting and walking.
