The story
The guest who asked for a place to rest
A sage named Salihotra lived in a small hermitage here and ground rice for his living. He shared half his flour with anyone who came to his door and ate the rest himself. One day, an old guest arrived and asked for food. The sage gave him his flour, and the guest asked for more, so the sage gave him even his own half. The guest then asked for a place to rest, and the sage gave him his whole hermitage. As the guest lay down, he revealed his true form as Vishnu, and he blessed the sage for his generosity. The question the guest asked, in the local telling, was 'Evvul?', meaning something like 'where is the place to lie down?', which gave the place its name, Thiruevvul. The lord has stayed there since, reclining, as the healer Vaidya Veeraraghava.
