The storyகதை
The poet Thirumangai Azhwar once travelled through this town on his way from temple to temple. He did not sing here. The lord and his consort, Ennai Petra Thayar, followed him hoping to be praised.கவிஞர் திருமங்கையாழ்வார் கோயில் கோயிலாகப் பயணம் செய்யும்போது இவ்வூரைக் கடந்தார்; இங்கு பாடவில்லை. இறைவனும் தாயார் என்னைப் பெற்ற தாயாரும் புகழ் கேட்க அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தனர்.
The poet went on to Mamallapuram and sang there, and the lord followed again. Lakshmi asked the lord to appear before the Azhwar, and he did, but the poet had already gone far south.கவிஞர் மாமல்லபுரம் சென்று அங்கு பாடினார்; இறைவன் மீண்டும் பின்தொடர்ந்தார். தாயார் வேண்டியபடி இறைவன் ஆழ்வார் முன் தோன்றினார்; ஆனால் கவிஞர் அதற்குள் தெற்கே வெகு தொலைவு சென்றுவிட்டார்.
That night the lord appeared once more in a dream, and the Azhwar saw Bhaktavatsala, the one who is fond of his devotees, in the temple at Thirukannamangai.அன்றிரவு இறைவன் கனவில் மீண்டும் தோன்ற, ஆழ்வார் திருக்கண்ணமங்கையில் தம் அடியார்களை நேசிக்கும் பக்தவத்சலரைக் கண்டார்.

The lord who followed the poet
Thirumangai Azhwar once passed through this town on his travels, going from temple to temple to sing of the lord. He did not sing here. The lord and his consort Lakshmi, who is called Ennai Petra Thayar, 'the mother who bore me', followed the poet, hoping to be praised. The poet went on to Thirukadalmallai (Mamallapuram) and sang there, and the lord followed again. Lakshmi asked the lord to appear before the Azhwar, and he did, but by then the poet had gone on towards Thirukannamangai far to the south. That night the lord appeared once more in a dream, and this time the Azhwar saw Bhaktavatsala, the lord who is fond of his devotees, in the temple at Thirukannamangai. The story is a tender one about a poet who is followed by the god he praises.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple is believed to have been built by the Pallavas in the late 8th century, with later contributions from the medieval Cholas and the Vijayanagara kings. The legend says the place is named Thirunindravur, 'the place where Lakshmi stood', because Vishnu stayed here on his way back accompanied by Lakshmi. It is also said that Kubera and Varuna worshipped Vishnu here.
