Homes, Clothes and Food in India: Class 1 Study Guide

People in India live in different kinds of homes, wear different clothes and eat different foods.

CLASS 1 ยท EVSHomes, Clothes and Food in India๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ›๐ŸŒพ

Everyone needs a home, clothes and food. India is a large country with hills, plains, deserts, coasts and islands, so the way people meet these needs varies from place to place.

Homes are built from what is available nearby and to suit the weather. Clothes keep us comfortable. Food depends on what grows locally. None is better than another: they are simply different.

Different kinds of homes

Clothes and food

In hot weather we wear light cotton clothes, and in cold hills people wear wool. People may wear a sari, kurta, salwar, dhoti, lungi or shirt and trousers, depending on the occasion and the place. Rice, wheat, millets, pulses, vegetables and fruit are eaten in many forms. Some families eat rice every day, others mostly eat roti, and some eat both.

1
Look at the weather

Hot, wet or cold?

2
Choose the clothes

Cotton, raincoat or wool.

3
Look at what grows

Rice, wheat, fruit.

4
Share and respect

Every family has its own habits.

Respecting differences

A friend's lunch box may look different from yours. We can be curious and kind: ask what the dish is called and say something nice about it. We do not laugh at what others wear or eat.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Draw your home, your favourite dress and your favourite food on one page.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Why do people in rainy areas build sloping roofs? So that rainwater runs off. Example: Why do we wear cotton in summer? It keeps us cool. Common mistakes: thinking all Indians eat the same food or wear the same clothes, and calling someone's food strange. India has great variety.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Cotton lets air through and keeps us cool. 2. Answers vary. A good answer says what the home is made of and who lives there. 3. Answers vary: it should be said politely.
