My Family, Festivals and Our Country: Class 1 Study Guide
We live with people who care about us. India has many festivals and shared symbols that connect us.
A family is a group of people who live together and care for each other. Families can be big, with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, or small. We call family members by relationship names: mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother (dadi or nani), grandfather (dada or nana). Each person in a family helps in some way.
India is a country of many languages, foods, dresses and festivals. People celebrate together and share sweets and greetings. Learning about each other's festivals helps us respect everyone.
Festivals of India

| Gurpurab | Prayers and community meals |
National symbols
The national flag has three colours: saffron at the top, white in the middle with a blue wheel (the Ashoka Chakra) and green at the bottom. The national animal is the tiger, the national bird is the peacock and the national flower is the lotus. We celebrate Republic Day on 26 January and Independence Day on 15 August. Children should stand respectfully when the national anthem is played.

Being a good citizen
We can keep our country clean, help others, be polite, follow rules and look after public places such as parks and buses. We also respect elders, people of all religions and people who do different jobs.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: Which colour is at the top of the flag? Saffron. Example: Name a festival where lamps are lit. Diwali. Common mistakes: mixing up the order of the colours or thinking only one festival is important. It is a good habit to say 'happy festival' to friends of any religion. Also note that families can look different, and every kind of family is special.
