My Body, My Senses and Staying Clean: Class 1 Study Guide
Our body has many parts that work together. Our senses help us learn about the world.
The human body has a head, neck, arms, hands, legs and feet. Inside the head is the brain, which controls the body. We use our hands to hold things and our legs to walk and run. Our heart pumps blood and our lungs help us breathe.
We have five senses: sight (eyes), hearing (ears), smell (nose), taste (tongue) and touch (skin). They tell us what is around us and help keep us safe. Seeing a red light tells us to stop, and the smell of smoke warns us of danger.
The five senses
| Sense | Body part | What we can do |
|---|---|---|
| Sight | Eyes | See colours and shapes |
| Hearing | Ears | Hear music, voices, horns |
| Smell | Nose | Smell flowers, food, smoke |
| Taste | Tongue | Taste sweet, sour, salty, bitter |
| Touch | Skin | Feel hot, cold, soft, rough |
Healthy habits
Good habits keep us healthy and happy. Wash your hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet. Brush your teeth twice a day. Take a bath every day and wear clean clothes. Cut nails and keep hair neat. Sleep for 9 to 10 hours, eat fruits and vegetables, drink clean water and play outside. These habits keep germs away.
Use clean water.
Scrub palms, backs and between fingers for about 20 seconds.
Wash all the soap away.
Use a clean towel.
Taking care of senses
Never put sharp things in your ears or eyes. Wear a hat in strong sun and do not look straight at the Sun. Keep the sound low when listening to music. See a doctor if your eyes hurt or you cannot hear well.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Which sense do you use to hear a bell? Hearing, with the ears. Which part of the body do we use to smell flowers? The nose. Common mistakes: thinking that the tongue alone does all the work of taste (smell helps a lot, which is why food tastes different when your nose is blocked) and skipping hand washing because hands 'look clean'. Germs are too small to see.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. The eyes. 2. Hands can carry germs that make us ill, and soap washes them off. 3. For example head, hand, leg and foot, with a line from each label to the body part.
