NAPLAN-style practice tests
Free practice tests for the four NAPLAN year levels, written to match the Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0) and the way NAPLAN is set out. Every test is scored as soon as it is finished, shows the right answer and a short explanation for every question, and lets students share their score with a parent or teacher. There are three numeracy tests, two reading tests and two conventions of language tests for each year, plus writing prompts with a self-check list.

What NAPLAN covers
NAPLAN is the national assessment for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, held each March. It has four areas: writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Most students do the tests online, and the online tests are tailored, so the next set of questions can be easier or harder depending on earlier answers. In Years 7 and 9, the numeracy test starts with a short section without a calculator. The tests mostly assess skills taught in the years before the test.
The official time for reading and numeracy is 45 minutes in Year 3, 50 minutes in Year 5 and 65 minutes in Years 7 and 9. Conventions of language is 45 minutes for every year. These practice tests use the same times.
Getting the most out of practice
- Short, regular practice helps more than a cram the week before.
- Read the explanation for every question that was wrong: it is the fastest way to learn.
- Keep it low-stakes. ACARA notes that the best preparation for NAPLAN is the everyday teaching of the curriculum.
- Read widely at home, including information texts and opinion pieces, not just stories.
Important
These tests are written by makekite and are not official NAPLAN tests. They are not produced or endorsed by ACARA, and the scores are not NAPLAN results or proficiency levels. See the official question types on ACARA's public demonstration site. The tests run in your browser: answers are not sent anywhere, and the best score for each test is kept only in your browser.
