The baby born in a prison cell
A cruel king named Kamsa ruled Mathura. He had been told that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would be the end of him, so he locked her and her husband Vasudeva in a prison cell. When their eighth child, Krishna, was born at midnight, the prison doors opened by themselves and the guards fell asleep. Vasudeva carried the baby across the river Yamuna in a basket, through heavy rain, and left him in safe hands in the village of Gokulam, where he was raised by the cowherd couple Nanda and Yashoda. According to tradition, the site of the prison cell is the Krishna Janmasthan, the birthplace of Krishna, in Mathura. Each year, the day of his birth, Janmashtami, is celebrated across the world.

Historyவரலாறு
According to Hindu tradition, a temple was built at Krishna's birthplace by his great-grandson Vajranabh. The site, known as Katra Keshavdeva, has produced pottery and terracotta from as early as the 6th century BCE in archaeological excavations, along with Jain sculptures. The site has seen several rebuildings over its long history, and the present complex is a modern one. Periyazhwar, Andal and Thirumangai Azhwar sang about Mathura.
