The story
The stones that carry the lord
A pilgrim walking to Muktinath comes to a river called the Gandaki, which flows past the temple. The river is famous for carrying a special kind of black stone, round and smooth, called a shaligrama. Some of them have spirals and patterns inside, and different patterns are worshipped as different forms of Vishnu. There is a belief that the lord himself is present in them. In the poplar grove of the temple, the trees are said to have grown from the walking sticks of eighty-four siddhas, the wise ones, who once walked to Tibet. The grove is also sacred to Buddhists, and both communities worship here side by side. Pilgrims call the place Muktinath, the lord of liberation.
History
Muktinath is sacred to the Sri Vaishnava tradition, whose old texts mention it as Tiru Salakkiramam. The central shrine is dedicated to Muktinarayan, also called Sri Murti Perumal. Thirumangai Azhwar praised it in the Divya Prabandham, and Kulasekhara Azhwar sang one hymn. Buddhists know the shrine as Chumig Gyatsa and venerate Avalokiteshvara, called Lokeshwar-Chenrezig.
