One of the giants, Tanchakan, said sorry. The demon who gave the city its name
In an age long past, three demons named Tanchakan, Tantakan and Kachamukan won great power from Shiva and grew proud. They began to trouble a sage named Parashara, who was meditating by the Vennaru river. Vishnu came to protect him. He fought Tanchakan with his discus and defeated him. Before the end, Tanchakan begged to be forgiven, and Vishnu was moved. He promised that the place would carry the demon's name forever, so that even a wrong-doer who repents is remembered. The land became known as Thanjavur. According to tradition, Vishnu defeated the other two demons in two other forms: as a mythical lion-like creature called Yali, and as the boar Varaha. This is why three temples stand side by side, one for each part of the story.

Historyவரலாறு
The Brahmanda Purana records the legend of this site. The temples are believed to be very old, with contributions from different rulers over many centuries. Unlike most Divya Desams, where a verse refers to one shrine, here the Azhwars' hymns refer to the three temples together, which is why they are counted as one.

The three temples stand on the banks of the Vennaru river. Manikundram has a small east-facing shrine with the lord and his consort in the same sanctum, in a seated posture on a raised structure. The Neelamegha Perumal temple has a three-tiered gateway tower and a separate shrine for Sengamalli Thayar, with the Amrutha Theertham tank, and images of Hayagreeva, Vedanta Desika, the Azhwars and Garuda. Thanjaiyali Nagar has a small shrine for Veera Narasimha, sculpted seated and blessing the sage Markandeya, under the Vedasundara Vimana.
