The story
The goddess who became a tree
High in the Himalayas, Vishnu once sat in deep meditation on a bare, snowy mountainside. He was so absorbed in his prayer that he did not feel the biting cold. His consort Lakshmi saw that he was exposed to the wind and snow, and out of love she took the form of a jujube tree, called badri in Hindi, to shelter him with her branches. When Vishnu opened his eyes, he was moved by her devotion and named the place Badrika Ashrama, in honour of the tree. The temple today shows the lord sitting in the padmasana posture. The story is a gentle one about care that does not ask for thanks, and it has drawn pilgrims to this remote mountain valley for centuries.
History
According to local tradition, the image of Badrinarayan was first served by the sage Narada. Later, when the region turned Buddhist, the image was thrown into the Tapt Kund spring, and Adi Shankara recovered it and reestablished the temple in the ninth century with the help of the local king. The temple is mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana, Skanda Purana and Mahabharata, and the Skanda Purana says there is no shrine like Badrinath. Periyazhwar and Thirumangai Azhwar praised it in the Divya Prabandham.
